Osteopathy
is a branch of mainstream medicine that follows the philosophy that the
body is a whole system. Osteopaths are trained in palpation and manipulation
techniques to diagnose and treat various illnesses and dysfunctions.
The
body has the ability to heal itself and the Osteopath is the facilitator
in that process. This branch of medicine was founded in 1874 by Dr. Andrew
Taylor Still.
He
recognized the importance of the musculoskeletal system as a key element
in health. He developed palpation and manipulation techniques to diagnose
and treat various illnesses. Since that time osteopaths have continued
to expand on these techniques and use them to promote the healing process.
